Sensitive skin is difficult to take care of because it is easily irritated. Even a few drops of tap water can cause it. Sensitive skin tolerates pharmacy cosmetics best. Choose products with soothing and intensely moisturizing properties. However, before you go into the details of care, you must identify the type of skin you have. How to distinguish sensitive skin from allergy-prone skin? What harms sensitive skin and what cosmetics for sensitive skin do I recommend? Does a sensitive skin tolerate a tanning bed and can a daily diet be harmful to it? Let’s find out!
How to distinguish sensitive skin from allergy-prone skin?
Sensitive skin may have a genetic basis, but more often, hypersensitivity occurs in adult life. The reasons for this includes:
- use of cosmetics with too strong effect;
- using too many cosmetics – mixing them together;
- air pollution;
- chlorinated water;
- UV radiation;
- stress.
What is more, stress can even cause atopic dermatitis and rosacea. Tired organism is weakened and, therefore, much more susceptible to infections, including skin infections, which can change into chronic conditions.
Skin hypersensitivity can be the cause of allergies. allergy differs from hypersensitivity, that the former may be the result of a single use of a new cosmetic. Sensitive skin is not so predictable – the same cosmetic can just as well irritate the skin and not.
Sensitive skin affects women rather than men. It results from its thinner and more delicate structure. Men’s skin cannot compare to it (luckily).
Any skin, not just dry, can be sensitive. More and more people with combination and oily skin also struggle with skin sensitivity.
What harms sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin does not tolerate staying in air-conditioned, overheated and smoky rooms for a long period of time; therefore, smoking cigarettes is also harmful to it. In addition, you should avoid sudden temperature changes, strong wind, and heavy rain. A tanning bed is also not the right place for you. Give up hats, scarves and other items of clothing made of synthetic materials.
Cosmetics recommended for sensitive skin
Cosmetics that are best tolerated by sensitive skin contain the following ingredients:
- melissa, chamomile, marigold extracts,
- panthenol,
- glycerin,
- allantoin,
- vitamin A and E.
However, components that are not recommended are:
- fruit acids,
- alcohol,
- retinol,
- vitamin A and C.
When it comes to sensitive skin, even the most gentle makeup removal and washing can cause serious irritations. Therefore, give up on using most soaps, gels and even tap water. It’s best to replace it with a pharmacy mixture made on the basis of flaxseed oil. I know that not everyone is satisfied with the smell and sticky consistency of flax; in this situation, it is worth reaching for cosmetics dedicated to sensitive skin. Fortunately, there are more and more products offered by various cosmetic brands: you can choose from lotions, toners and washing emulsions that you do not have to rinse with water. If you are not satisfied with the emulsion, you can replace it with boiled or mineral water.
On the other hand, in the case of hypersensitive skin, only pharmacy cosmetics are allowed. They should contain only soothing and moisturizing substances, because the fewer ingredients in a jar or tube, the lower the risk of redness or burning.
Sensitive skin vs. a tanning bed
Changing seasons are also a danger for sensitive skin. Sudden temperature drops will only intensify the symptoms of hypersensitivity. Therefore, you should avoid rapid cooling and heating as much as possible. I am talking about air-conditioned rooms and getting out of the cold from heated buildings or means of communication, and vice versa.
Moreover, you have to give up the tanning bed, which very much enrages the sensitive of your skin. Intensive rainfall and strong wind affect it negatively as well. When the first chill arrives, do not forget to add an extra layer of protective cream to your face before going outdoors.
Sensitive skin vs. everyday diet
An unsuitable diet can also worsen the condition of sensitive skin. For this reason, it is better to forget about strong tea, coffee, all carbonated drinks, alcohol, cigarettes, and spicy food. Instead, I recommend fruit, herbal and green tea.
What cosmetics for sensitive skin do you recommend? Maybe you have your own ways to avoid irritation? Will you share your experience? 🙂
