Simple tricks for lovely and long-lasting manicure
1. Did you know that any nail polish (not just gel polish) hates greasy nails? It turns out that even the best and longest-lasting polish won’t cling to the nail plate if you don’t degrease it first. So, before applying your nail polish, use a degreaser or wipe the nails with some spirit. The fun fact is that even a nail polish remover contains substances that leave a thin greasy coating so you can’t leave it on the nails. Always reach for a degreasing product after using the polish remover and before the nail polish.
2. One of the most common causes of nail polish chipping is not keeping the cuticles in good condition. If you want the nail polish to last for long, you need to do something about the overgrown cuticles first. Apply a cuticle softener and use a wooden pusher. Many girls cut the cuticles but I’m not a fan of the clippers. I prefer less invasive options, plus use a cuticle cream to prevent the cuticles from overgrowing.
3. Mattifying the nail plates is another useful trick to keep nail polish from chipping. Use a buffer to mattify the nails gently. Never rub them too hard to avoid damage to the nail bed. Apply a primer as well to prevent nail discoloration, make the nail polish stick to the nails better and last longer.
4. Secure the edge of nails. This step seems very simple but it’s extremely important. The chipping usually starts at the edge of the nails because this area is the most exposed to damage – you type on a keyboard and your nails suffer from micro-damage. After some time, the air, water and detergents make the product chip and come off. That is why try to remember to cover the edge of the nail with the nail polish as well (do the same while applying the top coat). This simple trick makes your manicure last even a few days longer!
5. Last but not least. Remember to care for painted nails as much as you care for them when they’re nail-polish-free. Use a hand and nail lotion regularly because it conditions the cuticles. Rub castor oil into the nails and cuticles in the evening to keep them from overgrowing. This oil has an antiseptic effect and prevents bacteria and fungi from developing.
